Spanking Threats in the Movies

We've all seen, and been disappointed by, movie scenes where an attractive female is threatened with a well-deserved spanking - only for her potential spanker to wimp out. Very frustrating. But just now and again, if the threat is delivered with wit and style, it can have a charm of its own.

One of my favourite snatches of spanko-threat dialogue comes in Ernst Lubitsch's classic comedy Trouble in Paradise (1934). Made just before the Hays Code started to bite, it gets away with some cherishable sexual innuendo. In one scene Herbert Marshall, suave man-about-town and jewel thief, applies for the post of secretary to a rich young widow, played by the delicious Kay Francis. Finding her affairs in a total muddle, he tells her, "Madame, if I were your father, I should give you a good spanking - purely in a business way, of course." Francis: "And if you were my secretary?" Marshall (firmly): "The same!" Francis (shooting him a look of sheer erotic delight): "You're hired!"

Sure, if Marshall had then proceeded to put Francis otk, it would have been utter perfection. But even without that, the scene's a joy to watch.

The film Trouble In Paradise (1934), is from a play by Aladar Laszlo 'The Honest Finder', is considered one of the greatest examples of the kind of sophisticated comedy in film.

In 1991 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress of the United States.

I wonder if the play had the spanking in it.

I tried to find the scene mentioned with the spanking threat from the movie on Youtube etc., but could not. There where several other scenes from the movie, but not the one in question. Does someone out there have a copy of this movie and could they get the clip with the spanking threat in it. Perhaps.

I also looked around the Internet to see if I could find reference to the spanking threat or an actual spanking in the play, but could not find any reference to spanking in the play.

I don't think I have a copy of Trouble in Paradise, but it is a lovely scene (with the lovely, and sadly rather forgotten, Kay Francis).

From the same sort of time period, My Man Godfrey had a nice threat, if I remember.

And Meet John Doe had a strange, dream-enaction of a spanking by Gary Cooper, to Barbara Stanwyck. Sort of a threat, I suppose...As follows (this is midway through him describing the dream he had):

But here's the funniest part of it all.
I was the fella up there doing the marrying.
You know, the Justice of the Peace or
something . . .

You were? I thought you were chasing

Well, yes, I was. But I was your father
then, see? But the real me, John Doe,
er, that is, Long John Willoughby, I
was the fellow up there with the book.
You know what I mean?

I guess so. Then what happened?

Well, I took you across my knee and
I started spanking you.

ANN turns and stares at him, eyes widening.

(quickly explaining)

That is, I didn't do it.

(correcting himself)

I mean, I did do it, but it wasn't me.
You see, I was your father then. Well,
I laid you across my knee and I said:
"Annie, I won't allow you to marry a
man that's, that's just rich, or that
has his secretary send you flowers.
The man you marry has got to swim rivers
for you! He's got to climb high mountains
for you! He's got to slay dragons for
you! He's got to perform wonderful deeds
for you! Yes, sir!"

BEANY enters and stands back of him,

And all the time, er, the guy up there,
you know, with the book, me, just stood
there nodding his head and he said,
"Go to it, Pop, whack her one for me,
because that's just the way I feel about
it, too."

So he says, "Come on down here and whack
her yourself." So I came down and I
whacked you a good one, see? And then
he whacked oneā€”and I whacked you another
one, and we both started whacking you
like . . .

He demonstrates by slapping his knees,
first with one hand and then with the
other. Suddenly he becomes aware of
BEANY and stops, embarrassed.

Well, if you're through whacking her,
come on, let's get going.

My favorite has always been the scene between Judy Garland and Van Heflin in Presenting Lily Mars. If you watch the clip closely you will see Judy Garland rubbing her bottom after she has sang her song and as Van Heflin is leading her away. The clear implication is that the spanking actually took place, we just didn't get to see it. Click the link below to watch the video.

Thanks for posting that Richard, new one to me.

It does look a little like the spanking actually got cut. It would've been a perfect segue from the man saying 'oh he'll deal with her all right' (or something like that) to Garland over Heflin's knee getting spanked. And as you say, the bottom-rub implies it did happen. After that build-up and chase, it could've been an all-time classic...I do like a scene with a nice build-up smiling smiley

Re: Presenting Lily Mars,

Unfortunately, Richard has it wrong. The spanking threat comes the first time Van and Judy meet. (She's an aspiring actress who tries to impress him with a surprise scene where she confronts him with an out-of-wedlock child -- played by her kid sister -- and Van's friends immediately think the worst. He threatens to "spank the acting out of [her]" the next time he sees her -- causing her to rub her bottom and utter her trademark, "Oh, my!".)

Later she goes to a party he's attending. When he sees her singing, he starts to advance while she backs up holding her arm protectively behind her. Unfortunately, nothing come of it, so there never was a spanking.

Welcome aboard js666, though I am going to challenge you as to why you think I have it 'wrong'.

The clip, as seen, was taken from my private collection. The link is to my upload on sevenload which is also posted on my site. I edited the clip as shown for everyone to see.

Now then, everything you write is correct (it is all in the video link I provided) up to the last paragraph. Van Heflin spots Judy at the party and that is where she puts her hand behind her, a chase scene follows and to escape the chase Judy joins the band that is playing and starts singing.

At the end of the song one actor says to the other "I do hope he will do something for Lily" and the other actor replies "Oh I think he will".

The next scene is Van Heflin leading Judy away as she is rubbing her bottom, implicating that she has just been spanked, further endorsed by her refusing to put her coat on because her bottom is sore.

It is all in the video link above that I provided for you all, I was even the one to edit it. Watch it again, wrong I most certainly am not on this one. It could be argued that she is rubbing her bottom as she is being lead away because she 'thinks' she is about to be spanked, but I think it is clearly implied that she was spanked after she sang her song and before she is escorted out.

In case you can't see the video link above just follow this link right here to watch the scene.

My favorite spanking threat is in the Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer, wherein the younger woman's uncle(?) threatens to take a hairbrush to her if she doesn't grow up and do the right thing. Myrna Loy is her older sister.

Heck, if I were the uncle I would have spanked them both with Cary Grant's charachter watching!

It isn't a movie, but my favorite spanking threat is when Captain Kirk threatens "Elaan of Troyius" in the 3rd-season TV episode of that name from Star Trek: The Original Series. She really wants to know what spanking means once he tells her that's what he wants to do to her--and, after she has spent the episode dressed in little more than her underwear (and throwing brattish tantrums), the notion of the young Captain going McClintock on her tush is pretty exciting. Although he's suddenly besmitten with her due to a chemical in Elaan's tears, Kirk says "I'll explain later," enigmatically with a smile to her "What is..spanking?" question. Mmmm.

My favourite spanking threat is in the wonderful Rene Clement film, Gervaise, which not only contains one of the finest laundry spanking scenes in history but also this choice threat, as the girl follows another girl down the street, blazing:

"And maybe you'll get another, harder, spanking this time... till your bottom is hot... and without mercy (literally pas loin, meaning not far). Madame, preparez vos fesses! (Madam, prepare your buttocks!)"

This may be a slightly more optimistic translation, but what the heck!

Looking back at mainstream spankings of the Golden Age of Hollywood, I'm guessing there were about as many spanking THREATS as there were actual spankings.

Tonight, I was innocently watching an old Warner Bros. western, Dodge City (1939) for the primary reason that it was in good old Technicolor, and from an era which knew how to mine the riches of that long-abandoned color process.

And about halfway through, there is a scene where the leading man, Errol Flynn, trips and falls and Olivia DeHavilland laughs at him. Unhurt but angry over being laughed at, Flynn gets up and threatens to put Miss HeHavilland over his knee and spank her. He really makes it sound as if he means it. But of course it never happens.

I've never seen Olivia DeHavilland on the receiving end of a spanking, but I read in the IMDb reviews that there is a scene in her 1938 romantic comedy Hard to Get where Dick Powell smacks her bottom with a broom. I've never seen the film, though.

And in answer to Luther's post about Barbara Stanwyck being "indirectly" threatened with a spanking in Meet John Doe (1941), I know of another one where Miss Stanwyck is also threatened with a spanking. That's in The Mad Miss Manton (1938), where she is threatened by Sam Levene.

Lots of threats, but not much action. We can dream, can't we?

In the period swashbuckling romp, The Flame and the Arrow (1950), Robin-Hood-style bandit Burt Lancaster threatens upper-class brat Virginia Mayo with a spanking. And in John Ford's 1936 expressionist Mary of Scotland (Ford doing arty for once), Frederic March as the Earl of Bothwell threatens a bunch of giggling court ladies with a collective spanking. Their reaction suggests they rather like the idea.

Four more:

In "Gentleman Jim" (1942), Alexis Smith insists on feeling the muscles of the current heavyweight champ, and Errol Flynn says something like, "If you were my girl, I'd turn you over my knee."

In "Eternally Yours" (1939), Billie Burke (the same year she played Glynda in the "Wizard of Oz"winking smiley has almost screwed things up for the young lovers, and C. Aubrey Smith says, "Pity you're too old to spank ... or are you?" (Starts rolling up his sleeves)

In "Charade" (1963), Cary Grant asks Audrey Hepburn, "How would you like a spanking?"

In "Spinout" (1966), Shelley Fabares has run Elvis off the road into a pond, and he threatens to "spank you 'til your bottom's as red as that car you're driving." She protests, "But I'm only wearing ...." He says, "Good, then you'll feel it." (Unfortunately, he steps into a deep spot and can't get to her.) The film also has a one-whacker of Deborah Walley by Will Hutchins.

Of course, we'll never come up with all of them.

I wonder what Shelly Fabares was "only wearing" in Spinout. Sounds like she would have gotten an even worse spanking than Jenny Maxwell in Blue Hawaii. What a pity it didn't happen!

Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief (1955) includes two spanking threats. Cary Grant, playing John Robey, a retired jewel thief living on the Riviera, tells Danielle (Brigitte Auber) a young Frenchwoman who's been teasing him: "School's open again. Professor Robey will now conduct a class in bad manners - or how to get spanked in a hurry." To which she retorts: "You can't touch me - I've already graduated." Further provocation, you might think.

Later on Grace Kelly's mother, played by Jessie Royce Landis (who later played Cary Grant's mother in North by North West), tells her, "You know, you ought to be spanked with a hairbrush and sent back to school."

In the Elvis Presley movie Tickle Me, Jocelyn Lane--a rare beauty who later married into royalty--gets soaking wet in the rain, refusing to leave the jeep she's sitting in, and Elvis pulls her out, hoists her over his shoulder and gives her behind the hardest one-smacker, after she wriggles about delightfully. It's very nice.
